UK micro-businesses and SMEs providing work phones are losing over an hour of work per employee each week because of poor connectivity hampering online work or unable to complete their work on time. This means medium-sized businesses could lose 250 work hours per week.

The following research indicates an average lost working time affects British mini & micro businesses, which caused a loss of £18.77bn a year means £7.7bn of business output is lost in the British economy every year.   

The hardest hit were retail and professional services (including legal, accounting, and media), means UK’s two major industries are suffering.

This has especially resulted in an annual revenue loss of £5.3 billion and £3.7 billion, respectively. Resulting in £560m of an annual loss in business output being badly affected British economy.

In a more personal context, Katy Field, the owner of George’s Cafe in Bidford-on-Avon, shared her experience of how the lack of mobile phone service has affected her business.

Due to the lack of Wi-Fi at the cafe and unreliable mobile card machines for payments, she has faced challenges in processing transactions and has resorted to alternative payment methods, such as bank transfers and credit. This situation has not only been inconvenient but has also resulted in financial losses for the cafe.

The effect goes beyond just her business, as the lack of signal affects other individuals in the village, including customers. The scenario is the same as George’s Cafe – a ‘poor network’ has a big impact on local businesses and drags many businesses down.
